Sizing and placing a battery shunt
A shunt needs to be rated above the maximum current your system can actually draw or produce, not just your typical load, since a shunt run near its limit reads less accurately and can overheat. Check the amperage rating against your inverter, alternator and any high-draw equipment combined, not just the battery monitor's own spec sheet.
Placement matters as much as rating: the shunt goes in the main negative cable between the battery bank and everything else, so that every amp in or out of the battery passes through it, with any earth or bonding connections kept on the battery side rather than the load side. Getting this the wrong way round gives a monitor that reads plausible but wrong figures.
Pair the shunt with a monitor built to read it, since Victron and Mastervolt shunts use different calibration values and are not simply drop-in replacements for each other's monitoring displays.
