Fitting glands into tight spaces
Selecting the right gland size comes down to the diameter range of the cables actually passing through it, not just the panel or pod it's being fitted to. Most glands accept a range of cable diameters rather than one fixed size, sealed using a compression washer inside the gland body, so it's worth checking the stated diameter range against your actual cable, power lead, data cable or coax, before drilling a hole to suit. Getting this wrong either leaves the seal too loose to be watertight or crushes the cable trying to force a tight fit.
Where several cables need to pass through one panel, a multi-cable gland can be more practical than fitting several individual low-profile glands side by side, particularly where panel space is limited. Whichever type is used, the panel hole itself needs cutting to the gland manufacturer's stated diameter, since glands are not generally forgiving of an oversized or undersized cut-out.
If you're planning cable entries for a pod or panel and aren't sure which gland fits your cable mix, ask us before drilling.
