Which Victron cable does which job
Victron's cable range splits by the bus it carries rather than by device, which is the quickest way to identify the right one. VE.Direct is a point-to-point serial connection used for a single MPPT controller or battery monitor talking to a display or a Bluetooth dongle. VE.Bus links MultiPlus and Quattro inverter chargers together and to a control panel, carrying both data and the units' own synchronisation signal. VE.Can is Victron's implementation of CAN bus, physically compatible with NMEA 2000 wiring, and is used to network Victron devices together or onto a boat's existing NMEA 2000 backbone.
Cable length matters more on some buses than others: VE.Direct has a maximum recommended run before signal quality drops, so a long helm-to-battery-compartment distance may need a different cable class or a repeater rather than simply a longer standard lead.
Getting the bus type right at the start avoids buying a cable that fits the plug but does not carry the right protocol for the device on the other end.
