Pairing a wireless windlass remote

A handheld remote lets you operate the windlass from anywhere on deck rather than being tied to a fixed switch at the bow, which is particularly useful when anchoring single-handed and needing to watch the chain and the boat's position at the same time. Range and reliability depend on line of sight and how much metal or superstructure sits between the remote and its receiver unit, so test operation from your usual anchoring positions before relying on it fully.

The remote pairs to a receiver wired into the existing windlass control circuit, so it supplements rather than replaces a hardwired switch, worth keeping as a backup if the remote's battery fails or it is dropped overboard. Check that the remote is rated for wet, splashed conditions and keep a spare battery aboard, since a flat battery at the anchorage is the most common reason these units stop working when needed.
