What changes when you switch to lithium
Moving to LiFePO4 changes more than the battery box. Lithium cells need a battery management system to balance cells and protect against over-discharge, over-current and, critically, charging below around 0C, which lead-acid chemistries tolerate but lithium cells cannot. Some drop-in batteries include the BMS internally; others rely on a separate external unit wired into the charging and load circuits, so it is worth knowing which type you are buying before wiring it in.
Existing chargers, alternators and solar controllers set up for AGM or gel absorption and float voltages will usually undercharge a lithium bank, so charge sources need reconfiguring, or in the case of an alternator, fitting a dedicated DC-DC charger to avoid overheating it under lithium's flatter charge curve. The weight and space saving is real, but treat a lithium conversion as a system change across charging, monitoring and protection, not just a battery swap.
