Sizing an open array for your boat
Array length has the biggest effect on performance. A longer antenna produces a narrower horizontal beam, which separates targets sitting close together, such as two vessels on a similar bearing, far better than a shorter array or a radome. The trade-off is size and weight aloft, so mast or arch strength and swing clearance both need checking before choosing a three, four or six foot array.
Pulse compression radars use a solid-state transmitter rather than a magnetron, giving faster warm-up, lower power draw, and typically better short-range clutter rejection around rain and sea state. Traditional magnetron arrays still offer strong raw range on some models and remain a straightforward swap where an existing pedestal and cable are already in place.
Whichever type you choose, check the radar's data protocol against your chartplotter, since not every array pairs natively with every brand of display, and confirm cable length and connector type before ordering, as radar cable is not something worth splicing.
