Choosing the right cable gland size
Cable glands are sized against the outside diameter of the cable passing through them, not the enclosure they are fitted to, so measure the cable before ordering rather than matching gland size to the junction box hole alone; a gland that is too loose will not seal, and one that is too tight can damage the cable's outer sheath. Multi-entry glands suit installations where several smaller cables need to pass through one point, which keeps the number of holes in an enclosure to a minimum.
Sealing relies on a compression gasket closing around the cable, so it needs to be tightened correctly rather than just hand-fitted, and it is worth checking the gland's rated seal matches the exposure the junction box will see, whether that is an open engine bay or a fully weathered deck fitting. Fit glands at the lowest practical point on an enclosure so any moisture that does reach the seal drains rather than pooling against it.
