Placing instruments for accurate readings
Where a sensor sits affects its readings as much as its spec. A barometer needs a stable, sheltered position away from draughts and direct engine heat to trend pressure accurately, while wind and humidity sensors need to be clear of exhaust, sails or superstructure that would skew airflow or temperature readings around them.
Most instruments in this range talk to a display or chartplotter over NMEA 2000, sharing the same backbone as GPS, depth and engine data, so check that your existing network has a spare drop and enough power budget before adding another device. Older NMEA 0183 sensors need a converter to join a modern NMEA 2000 network rather than connecting directly.
Barometric trend is more useful than a single pressure reading for passage planning, so it is worth leaving an instrument running continuously rather than switching it on only when a passage is planned.
