Reducing hull penetrations with one gland

Running several cables through a single multi-cable gland cuts down the number of holes drilled in a deck or bulkhead, which matters more than it sounds, since every additional penetration is another potential leak point to seal and maintain over the life of the boat. Adjustable inserts accommodate a mix of cable diameters within one gland body, commonly two to six cables depending on the model, so it is worth listing every cable that needs to pass through a given point before choosing gland size.

Fitting a multifunction display and transducer at the same helm position is a typical case where power, transducer, NMEA 2000 and antenna cables can all share one entry rather than four separate glands crowding a small panel. Keep some spare capacity in the insert for future cables, since retrofitting a gland later is more disruptive than adding one now.

A properly torqued, evenly compressed seal is what actually delivers the gland's rated protection, not the gland body alone.
