Choosing a gland for multiple cable runs
A single-cable gland gives the tightest seal around one cable but means a separate hole and fitting for every additional run, which adds up quickly on a boat carrying power, NMEA and antenna cable to the same helm area. Multi-cable glands accept several cables through one body and keep the deck or bulkhead tidier, though each cable still needs to sit within the gland's stated diameter range to seal properly, so mixing a thick power cable with thin signal cable in the same gland is not always practical.
Adjustable glands, which use a split grommet or compressible insert, are useful where the exact cable diameter is not known until the cable itself is chosen, avoiding a mismatch further down the line. Stainless fixings resist corrosion better than plated steel in a hull penetration, and UV-resistant material matters most on a deck fitting exposed to sun rather than one hidden inside a locker.
