Forward Looking Sonar

Forward Looking Sonar (FLS) Systems for Boats

See underwater obstacles ahead in real-time with forward looking sonar systems. Our FLS collection features ForwardScan and other forward-looking sonar from Simrad, Raymarine, Garmin, and Furuno.

Forward looking sonar provides early warning of underwater hazards, shallow water, and obstacles ahead of your vessel. Essential for safe navigation in unfamiliar waters, shallow areas, and reef navigation.

Advanced Navigation: Part of our Sonar & Fishfinders collection. Integrate with chartplotters for overlay display. Complement depth sounders and traditional transducers. Essential safety equipment alongside radar systems.

What forward sonar does and doesn't show

Forward looking sonar gives a real time view of the seabed and obstacles ahead of the bow, which is genuinely useful in unfamiliar shallow water or when picking a route through a reef pass, but it is not a substitute for charted data or a lookout. Range and detail both drop off at higher boat speeds, since the system needs time to build a picture of what is ahead; most manufacturers recommend a reduced speed for reliable results rather than running at cruising speed and expecting full warning distance.

It works best used alongside a conventional depth sounder rather than instead of one, since forward sonar looks ahead while a transducer confirms what is directly beneath the hull, and the two together give a fuller picture than either alone. Mounting position on the hull affects performance too, as the transducer needs clean water flow ahead of it, away from turbulence caused by trim tabs, thru hulls or other transducers nearby.
