How hydraulic thrusters differ from electric

A hydraulic thruster is driven by the boat's hydraulic pump and lines rather than a dedicated electric motor, which suits boats that already run hydraulic steering or stabilisers, since the thruster can share that existing hydraulic circuit rather than needing its own heavy gauge electrical supply and battery bank. That makes hydraulic systems more common on larger boats where the thruster needs to run for longer periods without the current draw an equivalent electric system would place on the batteries.

Installation still needs proper hull tunnel sizing for the thruster's thrust output, and hydraulic hose runs need to be sized and routed correctly to avoid pressure loss between the pump and the thruster motor. Anyone converting from an electric to a hydraulic thruster, or adding a bow and stern thruster together, should check the vessel's existing hydraulic pump has enough spare capacity before assuming it can simply be added on.
