Fitting a battery box correctly
A battery box does two jobs at once: it stops a battery moving or tipping in a seaway, and it contains any leak or off-gassing so it cannot reach bilge water, fuel, or bare metal nearby. Sizing needs to allow for the exact battery dimensions plus a little clearance for cable runs and terminal covers, since a box that is too tight makes routine checks and eventual replacement harder than they need to be.
Secure the box itself to a solid surface rather than relying on the battery's own weight to hold it in place, and route cables through a proper gland or grommet rather than an open gap that would let spray or bilge water track into the box. AGM and lithium batteries have different ventilation needs to flooded lead acid batteries, so check the box is suited to the battery chemistry you are fitting before assuming any box will do the job.
