Horizontal windlasses and locker depth

A horizontal axis windlass mounts entirely above deck, with the motor and gearbox sitting on the same plane as the chain, making it the practical choice where the anchor locker is too shallow for a vertical windlass's below-deck gearbox. That shallower footprint is the main trade-off against a vertical model: horizontal windlasses generally need a slightly larger deck footprint for the same pulling capacity.

Chain compatibility is worth checking carefully before ordering, since a gypsy is cut for a specific chain size and calibration, and chain that is not properly calibrated to the gypsy will slip or jump under load. Motor voltage, typically 12V or 24V, needs to match the boat's house system, and cable run length from the battery affects the gauge required, since a long run on undersized cable causes a voltage drop that shows up as a sluggish or underpowered windlass.

Deck thickness matters too, as through-bolting needs adequate backing to spread the load rather than relying on the deck skin alone.
