Sizing a thruster to your hull

Sizing a DC thruster correctly starts with the boat's displacement and tunnel diameter, not just the space available in the bow. A thruster rated too small for the boat struggles in any wind or current, while oversizing wastes battery capacity and adds unnecessary current draw through the cabling. Tunnel diameter is fixed once cut into the hull, so it's worth confirming thrust output against your boat's displacement before committing to a tunnel size.

DC thrusters draw very high current for short bursts, which means cable gauge and fusing need sizing for peak current rather than average load; undersized cable here shows up as voltage drop and a thruster that feels weaker than its rating suggests. A dedicated battery, sized to the thruster's duty cycle and positioned close to the tunnel to keep cable runs short, is standard practice rather than an optional extra. Control options range from a simple rocker switch to proportional joystick control, which varies thrust with how far the control is pushed.
