Untangling Garmin's networking cables
Garmin has used more than one networking standard over the years, so check which your equipment uses before ordering: older devices use the 6-pin Garmin Marine Network, and newer chartplotters and sonar modules increasingly use Garmin's Ethernet-based network with its own connectors. The two are not directly interchangeable without an adaptor.
A network switch is worth adding as soon as you have more than two or three devices sharing the backbone, since daisy chaining everything through a single cable run makes fault finding harder and can affect data throughput. Power/data combination cables save a separate run but are only suitable where the device actually needs both over the same cable.
Where your system mixes Garmin with other brands, NMEA 2000 remains the common ground for basic data such as GPS position and depth, even though Garmin's own network is needed for full chartplotter and sonar integration between Garmin devices themselves.
