Vertical or horizontal gland entry
The choice between a vertical and horizontal cable gland usually comes down to where cables need to enter an enclosure rather than personal preference. Vertical, top entry glands suit helm pods, instrument panels and junction boxes mounted on a flat or near flat surface, since gravity helps shed water away from the seal rather than letting it pool against it; a horizontal gland fitted on a flat top surface can trap standing water against the seal over time.
Fitting is straightforward provided the cable outer diameter matches the gland's rated range, since an undersized cable in an oversized gland will not seal properly even with the gland fully tightened. Where several cables need to pass through one point, a multi cable gland avoids drilling several individual holes, each of which is another place water can find a way in. Combine with a through bulkhead or waterproof gland elsewhere on the same installation where cables exit at a different angle.
