Setting up DSC on a fixed VHF

A fixed VHF only functions correctly as a DSC set once it has been programmed with the vessel's MMSI, and that has to be done before the radio is used, since most sets lock the MMSI after entry to prevent accidental changes. DSC distress calls also need a valid position feed: some fixed VHFs take GPS position internally, others rely on a NMEA 2000 or NMEA 0183 connection to an existing plotter or GPS antenna, so check which your chosen model expects before assuming it will transmit a position without any other wiring.

Models with built-in AIS receive let you call another vessel directly from its AIS target on screen rather than typing in an MMSI manually, which is worth having if the boat does not already carry a separate AIS receiver. A hailer or foghorn function needs an external weatherproof speaker wired to the set; it is not built into the radio's own internal speaker.
