Where AGM still makes sense
AGM batteries remain a solid choice where budget, charging simplicity or drop in replacement of an existing lead acid bank matters more than weight saving. Unlike lithium, AGM tolerates a wider range of chargers and alternators without a dedicated battery management system, and it can sit in an unheated locker through a UK winter without the same cold temperature charging restrictions that lithium chemistries have.
Sizing a bank correctly means working out your realistic daily amp hour draw rather than just matching the physical space available, and keeping starting, house and thruster banks separate where the boat's original wiring allows it. AGM batteries also don't like being left partially discharged for long periods, so a decent charger or solar trickle feed extends service life considerably.
Check terminal type and physical dimensions against your existing battery box before ordering, since AGM cases vary in height even within a similar amp hour rating.
