Matching a regulator to the battery bank
The right regulator depends more on what is being charged than on the alternator itself. AGM and lithium banks need different charge profiles and voltage set points, and a regulator without temperature compensation can overcharge an AGM bank in a hot engine bay or undercharge it in winter. Multi stage smart regulators allow these profiles to be set for the battery chemistry actually fitted, which a standard internal regulator generally cannot do.
An external regulator only helps if the alternator itself can supply the current a larger bank needs; fitting a smart regulator to an alternator already at its output limit will not increase charging speed, it will just push the existing output more efficiently. Check pulley ratio and belt rating too, since higher sustained output puts more load on both, and an undersized belt will slip long before the alternator reaches its rated current. On 24V systems, confirm the regulator and alternator are matched for that voltage rather than assuming a 12V unit can be adapted.
