Getting the coax and connectors right
A VHF or AIS installation lives or dies on the cable and connectors behind the radio, not just the unit itself. Low-loss coax such as RG58 suits short runs, while longer runs from helm to masthead antenna benefit from a lower-loss cable like RG213 to avoid signal attenuation over distance; as a rule, the longer the run, the more the cable quality matters.
PL259 connectors remain the marine standard for VHF, but check what your specific radio and antenna actually use, since some AIS and splitter units use BNC or N-type fittings instead, and mixing connector types means adding an adaptor rather than a clean join. Every joint in the run is a potential point of water ingress or signal loss, so keep connections to a minimum and seal any exposed joint with self-amalgamating tape.
If you are adding AIS to an existing VHF setup, a splitter lets both share a single antenna, but confirm it is rated for your combined transmit power before fitting.
