Why Ethernet speed matters here

Navico's Ethernet backbone is what carries radar, sonar and chart data between displays at the bandwidth NMEA 2000 was never designed for, so it runs alongside rather than instead of your existing N2K network. Cable and connector type matter here: proprietary Ethernet cables are rated for the marine environment and shouldn't be substituted with standard networking cable, even where the connectors look similar.

A basic multifunction display setup might only need a single point to point cable between two units, while a boat with radar, multiple displays and sonar modules needs a proper Ethernet switch or expansion module to keep everything talking without bottlenecking the network.

Cable length has practical limits before signal quality suffers, so plan longer runs, such as from a masthead radar to a lower helm, with that in mind before committing to a route.
