Matching battery type to the job
AGM and lithium batteries suit different roles on board, not just different budgets. AGM cells tolerate a wide range of charging regimes and older alternators without extra electronics, which makes them a straightforward swap for lead acid. Lithium iron phosphate batteries offer higher usable capacity for their size and weight and take a much faster charge, but they need a charging system, and ideally a battery management system, set up specifically for lithium voltage and current limits, so existing chargers or alternators may need reconfiguring to avoid damaging the cells.
Sizing a house bank comes down to daily amp hour draw against how many days you want to run between charges, plus a margin so the bank is never routinely discharged too deeply. Starting and thruster batteries have a different discharge profile again, built for a short high burst rather than a steady drain, so they should not be substituted for house bank duty.
Battery boxes and marine-grade terminals are worth fitting regardless of chemistry, both for vibration resistance and to keep terminals from corroding in a damp locker.
