Battery Management Systems

Marine Battery Management Systems (BMS) for Boats

Advanced battery management systems for protecting and monitoring marine batteries. Our BMS collection features systems from Victron Energy and Mastervolt:

  • Lithium BMS - Essential protection for lithium batteries
  • Battery Monitors - Precise state-of-charge monitoring
  • Cell Balancing - Ensure all cells charge equally
  • Protection Systems - Prevent over-charge, over-discharge, and over-temperature

BMS systems are essential for lithium battery installations, providing critical protection and monitoring to ensure safe, reliable operation and maximum battery lifespan.

Battery Protection: Part of our Power Management collection. Essential for lithium batteries. Use with battery chargers, battery monitors, and inverters. Monitor with monitoring panels.

Why lithium banks need a BMS

A lithium battery bank without proper management is a liability rather than a convenience. Lithium cells cannot tolerate over-charge, over-discharge or charging below freezing the way lead-acid can, so the BMS is doing active protection, not just reporting a percentage. It should be able to disconnect or signal the alternator, solar controller and inverter to stop charging or drawing before a cell reaches an unsafe state, which usually means wiring it into the charge sources rather than treating it as a bolt-on accessory.

Cell balancing keeps the individual cells within a pack at the same voltage, since even a small imbalance shortens the usable capacity and lifespan of the whole bank over time. On a retrofit, check whether the BMS communicates over NMEA 2000 or a manufacturer's own CAN network before assuming it will show up on your existing display.

Sizing the BMS to the bank, not just the battery brand, is the detail most often missed; get in touch if you are speccing a new lithium installation and want a second opinion on compatibility.
