Choosing between C-MAP chart tiers
The main decision with C-MAP is which tier of detail you actually need. REVEAL adds high resolution bathymetry and relief shading that show the shape of the seabed rather than just a depth figure, which matters most for anyone fishing structure or navigating close to shoals. MAX-N+ is the more conventional vector chart, updated regularly, and is the usual choice for straightforward passage planning.
Chart format has to match the plotter, not just the brand: a card cut for a Simrad or B&G unit will not read in a Lowrance slot, even though all three share the same underlying C-MAP data through Navico. Check the card format and coverage area, whether that is UK and Ireland, wider Europe, or worldwide, before ordering, since buying a far wider region than a boat ever cruises is a common oversight worth avoiding.
