Getting the right radar cable

Radar cables are rarely interchangeable between manufacturers even when the connectors look similar, since pin counts, data protocols and power ratings differ between Simrad, Raymarine, Garmin and Furuno systems. Always match the cable to the specific radome or open array model rather than assuming a generic marine cable will do the job; a scanner drawing more current than a cable is rated for will cause dropouts under load, not just at switch on.

Run length matters too. Longer runs between the scanner and the display unit may need a heavier gauge depending on the system, and routing should avoid tight bends near the mast step where cables flex constantly with rig movement. Use a proper through bulkhead gland at every deck or coachroof penetration rather than a drilled hole, since chafe at an unsealed entry point is one of the more common causes of radar failure on older boats.
