Getting VHF cable runs right
Coax loss adds up over distance, so a long run from an aerial at the masthead down to a below decks radio needs low loss cable such as RG8X or better rather than thin RG58, particularly on sailboats with tall rigs. Keep connectors matched: PL259 is standard on most fixed VHF sets, while some AIS and handheld accessories use BNC or SMA fittings, and mixing types means an adaptor at every joint.
Route cable away from engine looms and bilge pumps where possible, as electrical noise from other onboard systems can degrade reception on weaker signals. Where a cable must cross a bulkhead or deck, use a proper gland rather than a drilled hole sealed with sealant alone, since movement and UV will eventually break that seal down.
If you're unsure which connector or cable grade your radio and antenna combination needs, get in touch and we can talk it through before you order.
