Running cable to a camera position
Camera cable runs need planning before installation starts, since most systems combine power and video, or Ethernet on IP cameras, in a single cable rather than separate lines, and extending or joining that cable mid run is best avoided if at all possible. Check the maximum supported cable length for the specific camera before buying an extension, as video quality and power delivery both degrade over long runs, particularly with analogue cameras rather than IP ones.
Route cable well clear of radar and other transmitting equipment to avoid interference, and use a drip loop before any connector so water travels away from the joint rather than into it. Waterproof, mated connectors are worth the extra cost over a spliced joint at any deck or coachroof penetration; a joint made with heat shrink and tape in the open air will eventually let moisture in. Mounting position also affects cable routing, so it helps to decide where the camera and monitor will sit before ordering lengths.
