Analogue or IP: which camera setup fits

Multi-camera systems on boats generally split into analogue setups feeding a dedicated multiplexer or recorder, and IP cameras running over Ethernet with power delivered down the same cable. IP systems make longer runs and higher resolution easier to achieve but need a network switch capable of PoE, while analogue systems keep cable runs simpler and are often the more practical retrofit on a boat with limited existing wiring routes.

Where you want camera feeds shown on the same screen as charts and radar, check that your chartplotter brand supports camera input directly, since not every multifunction display can take a video feed without an additional interface box. Daylight, low-light and thermal cameras each have very different mounting and power requirements, so plan cable routes and connector types before drilling.

Positioning matters as much as camera spec: a bow or stern camera needs a clear, vibration-free mount, ideally with a sun shield, and IPX-rated housings should be checked against the mounting location's exposure to spray.
