Picking the right camera for the job
Docking and thermal cameras solve different problems, so it helps to be clear on what you're actually trying to see. A rear view docking camera is about close range visibility in tight marinas and needs to cope with spray and low mounting positions, while a thermal camera is for spotting other vessels, pot markers or people overboard at distance in darkness or fog, and resolution matters more than colour accuracy there.
Check how the camera outputs video before buying: some feed composite video straight to a dedicated monitor, others integrate over Ethernet with a compatible chartplotter for a picture in picture or split screen view. That integration path, and the cable length between camera and display, both need confirming against your specific plotter model.
Multi camera systems add a video switcher or recorder into the mix, which brings its own power and data cabling requirements separate from the cameras themselves.
