Matching holders to fuse type and cable size
An inline holder suits a single circuit and is quick to fit mid-cable, while a panel-mount or multi-circuit block is the better choice where several fused feeds need to sit together, such as a distribution point for lighting, pumps or electronics. The holder has to match both the fuse type it takes, blade, glass or ANL, and the cable gauge passing through it; forcing a heavier cable into a holder sized for a smaller gauge is a common cause of a loose, overheating connection.
Waterproof or splash-resistant holders are worth the small extra cost anywhere exposed to spray or bilge damp, since corrosion inside a fuse holder causes intermittent faults that are awkward to trace later. Pair holders with an appropriately rated bus bar when running several circuits from one supply, and keep the run from battery to holder as short as practical so the unprotected length of cable is minimised.
