The cabling behind a tidy VHF and AIS install
Coax choice affects signal loss over distance more than most installers expect: RG58 is fine for a short run to a nearby antenna, but a longer run to a masthead antenna benefits from a lower-loss cable such as RG8X or better, since every metre of thin coax bleeds away transmit power before it reaches the antenna. Connector type also matters; PL259 fittings are the marine VHF standard, while some AIS antennas and splitters use BNC or TNC connections, so check both ends of a cable before ordering rather than assuming a universal fit.
An antenna splitter lets a VHF and AIS share one antenna and is simpler to fit than running two full antenna cables, though a dedicated antenna for each avoids any switching delay during a DSC or AIS transmission. Mounting brackets for antennas should suit the mast or rail diameter on your boat, which varies more than the fitting hardware supplied in the box.
