Choosing the right chart coverage
Garmin Navionics+ cards are sold by coverage area rather than as a single worldwide product, so the first decision is which region, or regions, you actually need charted. Cards come on microSD, with an SD adaptor included for chartplotters that only take the larger format, and both slots on dual-slot units can be used to add plotter charts and a background reference layer separately.
Coverage refreshes and community edits download free through the ActiveCaptain app for the length of your subscription, which matters more on fast-changing areas like estuaries and marinas than on open water. If you are replacing an older Garmin g2 or g3 card rather than buying your first one, check which chartplotter software version you are running, since very old units may need a firmware update before a current card will be recognised.
