Radome or open array: which suits your boat
Garmin's radar range splits broadly into enclosed radome scanners and open-array units, and the choice usually comes down to boat size and how far you need reliable target detection. Radomes are compact, lighter and easier to mount on a smaller mast or arch, making them the practical choice for most sail and mid-size power boats, while open-array scanners offer narrower beam width and greater range, better suited to larger vessels needing to pick out targets at distance in poor visibility.
Both connect back to a compatible Garmin chartplotter over the network, so check your existing display supports radar overlay before ordering, and confirm mast or arch strength can take the scanner's weight and swing radius at the intended mounting height. Cable run length between scanner and display also affects installation, particularly on larger boats where the radar sits well forward of the helm.
