Getting the low end right on a boat

A marine subwoofer works harder outdoors than one built for a car or home, since open air and wind noise swallow bass more readily, so pairing it with an amplifier of adequate power, rather than running it straight off a stereo's built-in output, makes the biggest difference to how much low end you actually hear underway. Check the enclosure's sealed or ported design against where it will sit, as ported boxes need airflow space behind them that a tight helm seat locker rarely has.

Mounting position affects both sound and longevity: under a helm seat or inside a dry console keeps a subwoofer away from spray, while a sealed, water-resistant enclosure is worth choosing wherever splash is possible even under cover. Confirm impedance and power handling match your amplifier's output per channel before wiring in, and use marine-grade tinned cable given the vibration and damp environment.
