What a tidy Lowrance VHF install needs

Coax choice affects range more than most people expect over a long cable run. RG58 is fine for a short antenna lead, but RG8X or LMR-400 lose far less signal over runs beyond around five metres, which matters most on a flybridge or sailboat with the antenna at the masthead. PL259 connectors remain the standard for VHF and AIS antennas; keep the join soldered or properly crimped and sealed with self-amalgamating tape, since a damp connector is one of the most common causes of poor AIS reception.

An antenna splitter lets a VHF radio and an AIS transceiver share a single masthead antenna, a practical option where running two cables is impractical, though a dedicated AIS antenna will always give a cleaner signal than a shared one. Mounts and brackets in this range are sized for specific Lowrance antenna bases, so check the base diameter before ordering a replacement mount.
