Planning a Navico network

Navico's Ethernet system carries far more data than NMEA 2000 can manage, which is why radar overlay, shared sonar and multiple synchronised displays all rely on it rather than the slower N2K backbone. Cables are colour-coded by length and use a five-pin connector rather than a standard RJ45, so existing computer network cable will not substitute even where the connector looks similar.

A simple two-display setup can often be daisy-chained, but adding radar, a third display or a sonar module usually calls for a network switch to avoid overloading a single port and to keep bandwidth available where it is needed. Keep total cable run and device count within what your particular Simrad, B&G or Lowrance system supports, since exceeding it can cause dropped connections rather than an outright failure, which makes the fault harder to trace.

If you are unsure whether your existing units are Ethernet or SimNet only, check the ports on the back before ordering cable, as the two are not interchangeable without an adaptor.
