Connectors and cable runs for Raymarine sets

Cable choice matters more on a VHF or AIS run than most installers expect. Losses increase with cable length and rise sharply on cheaper coax, so a long run from an aerial at the masthead down to a below-decks radio benefits from a low-loss cable even where the connectors and plug type stay the same. PL259 connectors are standard on most VHF sets, but AIS units and some antenna splitters use different fittings, so check both ends before assuming a lead will simply plug in.

Where a boat carries both VHF and AIS, an antenna splitter lets them share a single aerial rather than running two masthead cables, though it adds a small amount of insertion loss to weigh against range. Mounting brackets and deck glands for the cable run are worth planning at the same time as the cable itself, particularly where it needs to pass through a bulkhead or deck.
