Diagnosing which part has failed

An autopilot fault is rarely down to a single component, so it is worth narrowing down where the fault sits before ordering a spare. A course computer that shows no response usually points to power or SeaTalkng wiring rather than the unit itself, while erratic steering under load more often traces back to the drive unit or a rudder reference sensor that has drifted out of calibration. Control heads and fluxgate compasses are the parts most commonly swapped out on their own, since they can fail independently of the rest of the system.

Check the part number on the failed component against the exact model of your autopilot rather than the boat model, as course computers and drive units were revised several times across the range and are not always backwards compatible. Older cable and hydraulic drives in particular vary by rudder torque and steering type, so matching the replacement to the original spec matters more than matching it to a newer one.
