What separates Raymarine's radome tiers

Raymarine's radome range spans magnetron and solid state pulse compression technology, and the practical difference between them is less about maximum range and more about how they perform close in and how quickly they are usable after switching on. Solid state radomes are ready almost instantly and can be left running continuously without the safety exclusion zone a magnetron unit needs, which makes them better suited to boats that want radar on as a routine collision avoidance aid rather than switched on only when needed.

Dome size, generally between 18 and 24 inches across this range, affects beam width and therefore target definition at range; a larger dome gives a narrower beam and better separation between close targets, which matters more on a busy estuary than in open water. All of them are designed to overlay onto a compatible chartplotter over the same network, so the deciding factor for most boats is really mast or arch space and how the radar will be used day to day.
