Masthead cable or wireless wind sensor

A cabled masthead wind sensor generally gives the most consistent long term reading, since it draws power from the boat's system rather than a battery, but it does mean running a cable the full length of the mast, which is straightforward on a new build and considerably more work as a retrofit. Wireless wind sensors avoid that cable run entirely, using a small transmitter and internal or solar assisted battery at the masthead, which suits boats where pulling a new cable up an existing mast is impractical.

Whichever type is fitted, calibration for boat speed and heading offset still needs doing once installed, and it is worth checking the transmitter or cable is clear of other masthead equipment such as VHF or AIS aerials that could cause interference. Wireless units also need periodic battery replacement at the masthead, which is worth factoring into where and how the sensor is mounted, since accessibility affects how easy that job is later.
