Coax, connectors and clean VHF wiring

Signal loss over a long coax run matters more for AIS and VHF than most people expect, since both depend on picking up a weak signal from other vessels many miles away. RG58 is fine for short runs to a nearby mast, but a taller mast or a longer cable path benefits from a lower-loss cable, so you are not giving away range you have already paid for in antenna height.

PL259 connectors are the marine standard for VHF coax and need to be properly soldered or crimped, not just screwed together, since a poor joint is one of the most common causes of a radio that transmits weakly despite testing fine on the bench. If you are running separate VHF and AIS antennas rather than a splitter, keep some vertical and horizontal separation between them to reduce the risk of one aerial interfering with the other's reception.
