Which autopilot controller suits your helm
A simple keypad works well at a single helm station where course changes are made by hand, while a remote or second control head suits boats with more than one steering position, or where the helmsman needs to adjust course without leaving the wheel. Current Simrad autopilot controllers connect over NMEA 2000 or SimNet depending on the system generation, so check which backbone your existing autopilot computer uses before choosing a controller.
Placement at the helm matters as much as the unit itself: a controller needs to be reachable without obstructing other instruments, and flush-mount options generally need more depth behind the panel than surface-mount units. Where a boat already has a SimNet backbone, an adaptor cable is usually simpler than converting the whole network for a single new controller.
