Find out moreDiagnosing a Simrad autopilot fault
Autopilot faults are usually isolated to one component rather than the whole system, which is why spares are sold individually. A course computer failure typically shows as a total loss of autopilot function, a rudder reference fault throws a specific alarm rather than silence, and a drive unit or ram problem usually shows as the boat steering roughly or hunting rather than holding a course.
Before ordering a spare, check the exact model and generation of your existing autopilot, since Simrad has revised course computers and drive units over several product generations and connectors are not always backward compatible. NMEA 2000 wiring and terminators are also worth checking, as a poor connection on the backbone can mimic a hardware fault and lead to an unnecessary part being replaced.
If a fault is hard to pin down, get in touch with the symptoms and we can help narrow down which spare is actually needed.
