Fitting speakers that suit the space
Speaker diameter and mounting depth need to match the cut-out and the space behind it before anything else: a coaxial speaker with a built-in tweeter needs more depth than a basic full-range unit, and cabin liners, lockers or hull curvature can restrict what will actually fit. Power handling and impedance should also be checked against the amplifier or stereo output rather than assumed, since underpowering causes distortion and overpowering risks damaging the voice coil.
Cable run length affects sound quality on longer runs, so use a marine-grade tinned cable of an appropriate gauge rather than reusing household speaker wire, and keep runs away from other electrical cabling where possible to reduce interference. Where speakers sit in an open cockpit or flybridge, check the IPX rating is suited to direct spray rather than just splashproof.
