MultiPlus or Quattro: sizing the right unit
The MultiPlus combines an inverter, battery charger and automatic transfer switch in one enclosure, switching seamlessly between shore power, generator and battery power as a single AC input source. The Quattro adds a second AC input, so it can prioritise and switch between two separate sources, such as shore power and a generator, without external switching hardware, which suits larger boats running twin sources or wanting a genuine no-break changeover.
Sizing comes down to continuous and peak load rather than battery capacity alone: add up what you actually run simultaneously, including motor start-up surges from pumps, windlasses or air conditioning, and choose a unit with enough peak headroom rather than just matching continuous wattage. Multiple units can be paralleled or run three-phase for higher output, and current models communicate over VE.Bus to a GX device for monitoring, so future expansion is worth thinking through before you commit to a single unit.
