Sizing a Phoenix inverter correctly

A Phoenix inverter needs to be sized to your peak AC load rather than your average one, since motors and pumps draw a surge current well above their running wattage when they start. Undersizing an inverter shows up as nuisance shutdowns under load rather than a gradual loss of power over time.

Cable gauge and fusing on the DC side are easy to overlook but critical: a high-output inverter pulls a large DC current at 12V, less at 24V for the same AC output, and the battery cable needs to be sized and fused to suit, not just long enough to reach. Keep runs as short as practical and use the manufacturer's recommended cable cross section for the model chosen.

If you already run other Victron kit, check whether VE.Bus or VE.Direct monitoring is available on the model you are considering, since that affects whether it can report into a Cerbo GX or similar display alongside the rest of the system.
