Wired or wireless: choosing a wind sensor
A wired masthead sensor gives the most reliable long-term reading, sending true and apparent wind speed and angle down a dedicated cable to a NMEA 2000 or NMEA 0183 network; the trade-off is running a cable the length of the mast, straightforward on a new build and more of a job on a refit. Wireless sensors solve that problem with a battery or solar-powered transmitter at the masthead, at the cost of a battery to check periodically.
Replacement vanes and cups are often enough to fix a sensor that has stopped reading cleanly, rather than replacing the whole unit; a jammed or slow-spinning cup assembly is a common symptom of salt build-up rather than electronic failure. Whichever route you choose, apparent wind only becomes genuinely useful once it is combined with boat speed data to calculate true wind, so pair a wind sensor with a working speed log if you do not already have one.
