Description

The Simarine STR2 is a radar tank level sender for NMEA 2000 boats. A high-precision micro-radar sits on top of the tank and measures the liquid level from outside, so nothing touches the water or fuel and there are no floats or moving parts to stick or wear. It works through flat, rigid plastic or fibreglass (GRP) tank tops up to 10 mm thick and covers tank heights from 150 mm to 2000 mm, with an accuracy of about 2% and a resolution of around 7 mm. Metal tanks can be measured using the Simarine S5 metal tank adapter, which is sold separately.

Installation is peel-and-stick. You clean the lid with the supplied alcohol pad, bond the sender near the centre of the tank and connect it to the NMEA 2000 backbone with its M12 5-pin connector. It runs on 8 to 35 V DC and draws only around 14 to 20 mA at 12 V. Once fitted, the STR2 sends tank level as the standard Fluid Level message, PGN 127505, which compatible displays such as Simrad, Lowrance and B&G (NSX, Zeus and NSS families) and Raymarine Axiom can show. Many Garmin models display PGN 127505 for fuel only, so check your display before using it for other fluids.

Setup is done over Bluetooth in the free Simarine Connect app for iOS and Android. In the app you name the tank, enter its volume and either type in the tank height or let the sender detect it automatically. You can also set the NMEA 2000 tank instance and fluid type, and add up to 100 calibration points for irregular tanks. Firmware updates are delivered through the same app. The STR2 is sealed to IP67, designed and made in Slovenia and covered by a 3-year Simarine warranty. Simarine states that NMEA 2000 certification is pending, and the STR2 is not compatible with the Simarine PICO battery monitor.

Will the STR2 work through my tank lid?
Through-lid measurement works on flat, rigid plastic or fibreglass (GRP) tank tops up to 10 mm thick. For metal tanks, bond the S5 metal tank adapter (sold separately) and fit the sender to that; do not bond the sender directly to metal.
What tank sizes does it cover?
The STR2 covers total tank heights from 150 mm to 2000 mm. The 150 mm figure is the shortest tank it covers, not an air gap; the only blind spot is a small dead zone of about 10 mm at the radar face.
Which displays can show the STR2?
Any MFD that reads NMEA 2000 PGN 127505 (Fluid Level), for example Simrad, Lowrance and B&G (NSX, Zeus and NSS families) and Raymarine Axiom. Many Garmin models show PGN 127505 for fuel only, so check your model for other fluids.
Does it work with the Simarine PICO?
No. The PICO works with the STR1 only. The STR2 is an NMEA 2000 sender, and a PICO with the Simarine NMEA module will not read it.
Is the STR2 certified for NMEA 2000?
Simarine states that it is currently in the NMEA 2000 certification phase.
How is it set up?
A one-time setup in the Simarine Connect app over Bluetooth sets the tank name, volume, units and tank height. The height can be entered manually or detected automatically with about 1 to 2 cm of liquid in the tank. Do not run the setup before the sender is mounted. The LED blinks red until setup is complete, then green.
Can irregular tanks be calibrated?
Yes. You can add up to 100 calibration points in the app, each pairing an actual volume with the sensor reading, and edit or export them later.
What power does it need?
8 to 35 V DC, with a typical draw of about 14 to 20 mA at 12 V. Fit a suitable inline fuse near the power source.
