Class A or Class B AIS transceiver
A Class A transceiver transmits more frequently and at higher power, and is mandatory for larger commercial vessels, while Class B suits leisure boats that want to be seen by other AIS-equipped traffic without the cost or power draw of a Class A unit. Both differ from a receive-only AIS, which shows other vessels but does not transmit your own position at all.
Transmitting requires a valid MMSI registered to the vessel before the unit is commissioned, since a transceiver broadcasting without a registered MMSI is of little use to other traffic trying to identify you. Installation also needs a dedicated VHF antenna, or a splitter shared with the main VHF radio, plus a GPS position source if one is not built into the unit itself.
